Here we have Steam Workshop rebuild No.18, our Kerr Stuart rebuild from a Romulus base. Originally named 'Bennu', but signwritten with the name 'Theodore' for her previous owner, we were really pleased with the way this loco turned out. It's essentially a standard Romulus under the skin, with around 3 inches added to the rear of the frames to bring the angled hand brake stansion inboard of the rear buffer beam and to help the overall proportions.
Inspired by the well known 2' gauge Kerr Stuart 'Diana', the bodywork is all 2mm stainless steel, including the side tanks which hold a large volume of water to feed the injectors. The original Romulus well tank between the frames is fully functional too and originally supplied a crosshead water pump. The pump was removed and the tank feeds blanked off by the previous owner preferring the twin injectors, so the well tank is currently just functioning as extra ballast at the moment. To that end, she's a heavy Romulus when full. The side tanks are particularly large and hold a good weight of water, and when added to the full well tank there's certainly enough weight to give the engine good adhesion.
Mechanically all's well with most fittings being beefed up a little over the standard Romulus design to produce a more robust loco. The boiler is steel and comes with a fresh set of new tubes, healthy ultrasonic tests and a fresh boiler test both hydraulic and steam so she's fully sorted and ready to run.
As with most of our models, what you see isn't necessarily what you get!
We often photograph models pretty much as they come in to us, and then when someone phones to say they are interested we pull the model into our workshops and make sure everything is tested, sorted and ready to go. So if you see the odd model photograph with a fitting missing or a return crank in the wrong place, that's just how it came in and certainly not how it will leave.
