Here we have a 5" gauge GWR 55xx Small Prairie tank loco. Only steamed on a few occasions, the model was manufactured by Kingscale and it has been 'enhanced' by it's previous owner, having had numerous improvements made to it to make it a cut above the standard product. There is a large water tank with balance pipes that has been added to the rear bunker to increase water capacity. There's a sight feed now in the displacement lubricator system so that you can both see and regulate the delivery of oil to the cylinders. There have been a few alterations to the valve gear too although most mechanical modifications have been subtle there.
As with all the Kingscale models, they are really good looking things, with lots of nice detailing and a really nicely made professional boiler and to that end they represent good value for money. The well known downside is that the valve gear and mechanical side of things, axle box fit in the horns, crosshead fit in the slide bars, general slop in the motion as well as plate thicknesses on the bodywork and running boards are not what you'd generally expect to find in a new, traditionally model engineer built loco. They do tend to pretty much work straight out of the box, but don't expect a mechanically tight model that will stand a few years of passenger hauling down your local club!
Fitted with an injector, an axle pump and of course a hand pump in the tank, she also comes as you'd expect with all the proper paperwork and hydraulic boiler certificates.
As with most of our models, what you see isn't necessarily what you get! We often photograph models pretty much as they come in to us, and then when someone phones to say they are interested we pull the model into our workshops and make sure everything is tested, sorted and ready to go. So if you see the odd model photograph with a fitting missing or a return crank in the wrong place, that's just how it came in and certainly not how it will leave.
