Here we have a bit of a spectacular beast at nearly 10 feet long,..... a 5" gauge East African Railways 28 Class 2-8-2, currently no 2801 'Mvita'. She has been in the queue to undergo a full Steam Workshop rebuild for far too many years now to realistically think that we are going to get the time we need to make a start! Currently, as you can see she is in cosmetically 'barn find' condition, so you'll have to use your imagination a bit to see how good she will hopefully turn out once properly restored!
She's not lost her space in our restoration queue, but we thought it sensible to pop her up for sale in her current condition as well in case there are any enthusiastic model engineers out there who fancy taking on the restoration instead of waiting for our workshop space!
The boiler, which is silver soldered copper,..... and huge, has been hydraulically pumped up to 200psi, and there were no visible leaks or worrying losses of water visible anywhere so we think everything should be good on that score. The valves were initially seized up, and the previous owner unfortunately dragged the loco out of his father's garage (where they had been stored since the early 1980s!, and the moving crosshead has twisted through the combination levers on both sides. So these will need repairing before the loco can run. Beyond that though everything else seems still nice and tight and in pretty good condition. It appears to be essentially a strip down, refresh and repaint and then reassemble job, and there is an incredibly impressive, unique and massive 5" gauge locomotive waiting for you at the end of that process!
The KUR EA class, later known as the EAR 28 class, was a class of 1,000 mm (3 ft 3 3⁄8 in) gauge 2-8-2 steam locomotives. The six members of the class were built in 1928 for the Kenya-Uganda Railway (KUR) by Robert Stephenson and Company in Darlington, England, and were later operated by the KUR's successor, the East African Railways (EAR).
