3 1/2" Baldwin 4-8-4

Here we have an absolute gem of a 3 1/2" gauge Western Maryland 4-8-4, built essentially to the Martin Evans 'Columbia' design, but as you can see, with an extraordinary level of finesse and detail.  The tender alone must have about 3000 rivets in it!

The boiler is a very professionally made copper silver soldered one, and of course comes fully tested and ticketed, with a fresh 4 year hydraulic cert and a fresh annual steam test so she's ready to play.  When she arived here at the works, she was fitted with radio gear.  There is a dry compartment in the tender to house the batteries for both the servos and the electric loco lights which we have left in.  We have removed the servos on the footplate to return her to manual control, but they go with the loco and putting them back on is a 5 minute job.  It's quite a reach over that 'monster' of a tender, so we completely understand why the builder chose to go that route.

The machining work here is first class, dripping with finesse and detail, it's a model that you can stare at for ages, each time noticing something new that impresses you.  There's an injector fitted, an axle pump and footplate mounted bypass valve, and of course the usual hand pump in the tender.  Lubrication is mechanical and hidden under the running boards as usual.  This is a big engine too.  The stand's you see her on are 1.2 meters long each,.... so the whole thing is comfortably longer than a 5" Britannia.  We've had her running, and are just tweaking the balance to take some load off the front bogies and drop it onto the drivers as she was initially a little light on her feet.  When she leaves here though, she will be pulling like a,..... well,..... like a train!
