Count the Counties! We appear to collect them,.... two 'County of Chester's in for a start,..... the 4-4-0 GWR 38XX Earlier Churchward 'County of Chester', and now this. So here we have the later model! A nice GWR 1000 Class Hawksworth 4-6-0 County. 30 of these were built by the GWR over a two year period just after the war, and it's basically a Modified Hall with an LMS 8F boiler on it. Again, another pretty rarely modeled prototype this, although for reasons that we can't fathom, GWR 4-6-0s (with the exception of Kings), seem to be generally very rare in 3 1/2" as a whole. We know of only one other County, a smattering of Halls, and a Grange, but have never seen a single 3 1/2" Manor, Castle, Saint or Star.
But,.... to the model! So, she's a very nicely engineered loco. Built by an experienced model engineer to run, which we are told it does very well. On close inspection the valve gear is all very crisp and well finished, with very little slack in it. There are footplate operated draincocks, and then twin injectors as well, plus of course the obligatory 'I'm a failure',... sorry,.... emergency hand pump in the tender. Lubrication is from a mechanical pump and resevoir hidden in the usual place under the front running board.
