Here we have a particularly fine piece of model engineering in this 3 1/2" gauge example of LBSC's small boilered 'Tich'. This really is a cracking model, built by the late Alan Jacobs and dripping with delicacy and finesse. The photos hopefully give you some of the feel for the model, but they don't convey how silkily smooth the movement of all the controls are, giving away Alan's fine model engineering skills.
Covered in lovely touches, particularly on the footplate. The two control valves for the home made and scale looking injector and the bypass for the axle pump. The sliding door on the tiny chain for the coal bunker. The delicate finials on the top of the handrails, the home made valves and handwheels on the manifold, even the way in which the etched chequerplate cover for the displacement lubricator reservoir slots satisfyingly into the wooden footplate floor give this away as a model of exhibition winning quality.
It's a heavy little model too, with a lead filled tray between the frames, both shielding the axleboxes from debris whilst increasing the loco's ability to pull a load. The boiler is of course silver soldered copper and can come with new hydraulic tests and a fresh steam test to ensure all is working as it should. We are very much looking forward to putting a fire in her and breathing life back into what promises to be a superb little runner.
As with most of our models, what you see isn't necessarily what you get!
We often photograph models pretty much as they come in to us, and then when someone phones to say they are interested we pull the model into our workshops and make sure everything is tested, sorted and ready to go. So if you see the odd model photograph with a fitting missing or a return crank in the wrong place, that's just how it came in and certainly not how it will leave.
