Here we have an extremely interesting beast! A 15" gauge freelance 0-6-0 built by Jack Lemmon-Burton for his estate railway near Hickstead in Sussex. She's a superbly engineered machine, the valve gear being particularly nicely machined and still in very tight condition with no appreciable wear and tear. Certainly the loco has been dry stored and on a plinth in a museum for some considerable time so it's not seen a great deal of use. It's visited the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway in the past for a play, and certainly ran a little at Jack's original railway, but beyond that we think it's not had much use at all. Certainly the boiler, which is of traditional riveted steel construction with expanded tubes appears to back this up and is in very good condition with solid and consistent plate thicknesses showing under our initial ultrasonic tests.
There are a couple of large, original Gresham & Craven injectors fitted and a rather beautiful mechanical lubricator that we are desperate to keep for our other projects! It's an odd engine this, because it's definitely not 'classically attractive' from an aesthetic point of view, but having crawled round it in the flesh now it's completely won us over, and we are all slightly in love with it. It's definitely going to be a good runner, and we are very much looking forward to recommissioning it and putting it back on the rails!
