Here we have a particularly nicely made 5" Simplex to the ever popular design by Martin Evans. This loco was originally made and run in South Africa, and was finished off and 'tweaked' by an extremely well respected model engineer, the late Ron Etter. And you can tell. Loads of nice touches on this Simplex, and all of them feel very skillfully engineered. There's a lovely little everlasting blow down valve under each side of the footplate, operated by cab floor handles, and plumbed remotely into the usual foundation ring blow down spots. There's an injector fitted, and an axle pump with a rather neat 'regulator' valve on the back of the tank in the footplate to control that flow. There's also another valve which enables you to select where you'd like the pump to feed from, being either the side tanks of an auxiliary supply from a driving truck. There also a hand pump in the side tank. Lubrication is mechanical with a large reservoir on the running board.
The boiler is silver soldered copper and of course comes with a full fresh hydraulic test and a fresh annual steam test so she's ready to play. This is a particularly well thought out and well engineered example of the design, with excellent provenance in the Ron Etter name. We think it's highly likely to run every bit as well as it looks like it should!
As with most of our models, what you see isn't necessarily what you get! We often photograph models pretty much as they come in to us, and then when someone phones to say they are interested we pull the model into our workshops and make sure everything is tested, sorted and ready to go. So if you see the odd model photograph with a fitting missing or a return crank in the wrong place, that's just how it came in and certainly not how it will leave.
